All About Lounging Sound

Who is Lounging Sound? What is it? When did it start? And what about world domination?
Lounging Sound is an online radio station created in the summer of 2002.  The original title of the station was Broken Jawa Radio and then Yellow Evening Sun Radio.  The name “Lounging Sound” came about from it’s second inception idea as a theme radio station for the late popular interactive ShoutCAST show, “Lounging” (created by its stars, J & Jammin).  Though the station did not stay in that theme for very long, it kept the name.  “Sound” was not only a derivative of the obvious (being a radio station), but also as a sort of tribute to its creator’s home town of Tacoma, Washington (on the Puget Sound).

Its creator is 24 year old Joseph Snodgrass, and the show originally broadcasted from the “StailLounge”, in Spokane, WA. USA.  Sometime in 2006, Toxicant Radio (which had recently been voted as one of Morpheus Music’s best ambient music radio stations (as had Lounging Sound itself)) joined Lounging Sound to form one station.  The Lounging Sound name was kept.  … So, now, LS radio is run by both Mr. Snodgrass as well as Toxicant’s owner, musician Jourdan Laik.  However, with this merger came a new headquarters, and now the station is broadcast from the suburbs of Milwaukee, WI.

Lounging Sound broadcasts the highest quality radio (128kbps) and the best music in most Ambient sub-genres, Chillout, Lounge, Psytrance, Drone & New Age.  It is quickly growing to be a widely known favorite with the finest taste in music. LS Radio's specific mission is find and play the best .. .and only the best.

Why would I want to become a member of Lounging Sound?
Members are allowed to browse through our database of songs and associate "Favorites" with their account. When they come back to Lounging Sound, they can add/remove and request favorites from their 'favs' list. They're also all set up to received other benefits from the Lounging Sound Web site as they arrive; benefits only given out to members. Shows

What are the different shows that you play?
Lounging Sound has many different shows that go on throughout the month. Some happen on a regular and daily basis, others happen on a monthly basis. Usually, the monthly shows are 'mixed' prior to their airing, while the daily shows are random songs picked from our database from a set playlist/genre/type. Below is a description of each show that we play, ranging from a daily to monthly basis:

Regular Rotation (Mon-Sun) [NOW PLAYING]
The Regular Rotation show is a randomly driven (least played song on LS Radio) playlist. It mostly consists of Ambient and Electronica tunes that don't fit into our other daily shows. The show runs everyday, Monday through Sunday.

12am - 9am; Sat & Sun (all day)

Chillout & Lounge (Mon-Fri)
Our Chillout & Lounge show is also a randomly driven playlist show. We pull from database the choicest of Chillout and Lounge music. This show airs only from Monday to Friday.

9am - 11pm central

Psytrance Conundrum (Mon-Fri)
A helpful serving of upbeat psytrance and goa to get you through your workday. We play artists like Aes Dana, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Solar fields and more (Pretty much anything from Ultimae Records). We try not to get too trancey here, whilst adding the ambient effect as well.

11am - 6pm central

New Age (Mon-Fri)
We play artists like 2002, Gandalf, Kit Watkins and more. This show is definately more towards the musical and melodic minded individual.

6pm - 11pm

Space Walk (Mon-Fri)
This show is specifically geared for all the minimal ambient, drone types out there. From dark ambient, to the slow drifting and soothing melodies. We feature artists like James Johnson, Liquid Mind, and Marvin Ayres. This show airs only from Monday to Friday.

11pm - 12am central

Serve Chilled (Monthly Special Presentation)
Every month we receive new music from new artists. And every month we always seem to have our favorites we like to listen to, either here on the station, or when we're out in our car or with our iPods. Serve Chilled is a show that brings you our favorites songs from the previous month. Some are new, some are old favorites. Whatever we enjoyed, we'll mix it up and share it with you. A new show is made each month and repeats throughout the month...

[blendfish] (Monthly Special Presentation)
A geometric water garden of sound created by DJ Genfish containing ambient transcendent plant life in a subconscious aquatic tank inhabited by tropical audio fish. Please don’t tap on the glass. Inspired by the things that surround, tune in and listen to the offerings. This show is prepared with love once a month and repeats throughout the month...

How can I get my songs on your show(s)?
If you're not currently an artist skip to the "For the Artists" section on this page. If you're already an artist on this station you're most likely categorized and featured in our Chillout & Lounge and/or Psytrance Conundrum shows, if not for the Regular Rotation show. To be featured on the [blendfish] and/or Serve Chilled show, you must be specifically chosen by one of the resident DJs here at Lounging Sound.

Help Me

I'm trying to connect, but nothing happens?
At the top of every page are logos representing a program of choice to stream in. Each icon is set to open the appropriate program assuming that the filetypes on your computer are associated with these programs (they are by default). If you're having problems connecting, it's mostly likely because some other program has taken over the default filetypes (Real Player likes to do this, along with Music Match). This is why we recommend Winamp for listening to streaming radio.

You can get around this problem by opening up your audio play of choice and open a stream (Winamp, ctrl+L) and type in: http://205.234.195.239:8025

I'm trying to connect, but is says "...forbidden..." What's this about?
This means you've either been banned for stream ripping, or you tried to connect to our servers more than twice at a time (we only allows two multiple connections). Lounging Sound hates stream ripping. Why? Because it's selfish! And because this station doesn't get paid a dime from anyone. We pay out of our own pockets to stream this music. We also, and most importantly, think that its horribly unfair to the independent (and even signed) artists who should be compensated for their work. Your IP address will remained banned for a period of 24 hours. After this time you may connect again.

I'm trying to request a song. How do I do it?
Requesting is as simple as picking an artist, looking for a song, and hitting the [REQUEST] link at the far right of every listing. If the song that is currently playing is being listed in your search, the title of the song will have a [NOW PLAYING] label next to it, and the request link will not show up. Once you pick a song you want to request, a pop-up window will open, giving you more information about the request. It will either tell you that it was a success (along with other information about the song), or it will give you a reason why the request could not be made (we do not play the same artist within 15 minutes, and we do not play the same song within 4 hours. You can request 2 times every 15 minutes but no more than 100 times per 24 hour day). Once you've requested a song, click back to our home page and you'll see your song listed in the 'Coming Up' section. If you left a name and message with the song, it will be displayed just below the 'Now Playing' section and just above the 'Coming Up' section. Get started now!

What are all these different labels and what do they mean?
On the home page, and on other specific pages, we have little labels that help you obtain more information about a specific song or artist. Here they all are, and what they mean:

[REQ] - This song has been requested by someone.
[FAV] - This song is part of your favorites (membership required).
[NEW] - This song has been added to LS Radio within the last month.
[RATE +] - Rate this song +1
[RATE –] - Rate this song -1

For the Artists

I am an artist and I'd like my music played on your station
Awesome! We'd love to play it! But before we do, we need to review it and make sure that it's quality work and fits into at least one of our genres. Lounging Sound is all about playing only the best in the wide field of ambient and electronic music. But don't let that deter you to submit your songs. The first step is to contact us. If you have versions (.mp3 at least 128kpbs format) on the internet, send us an email with links. If not, we can hook you up with an FTP account so you can send us music at any time. So what do you do? Contact Us!

What's an 'Artist Account' and how do I get one?
Anyone with an artist account can login and see unique stats that no other person can see about their music that's being played here on Lounging Sound. stats like the top 5 most played song, top 5 requested song, and the last 5 of your songs to be played. We even give you the ability to update/add info to each song (album, genre, etc) in case we have something wrong. Of course this means then that artists who are currently being played on Lounging Sound can only have an account.

Most new artists will receive an 'Artist Account' login when they're accepted. If you don't have one for some reason, and you're interested, please contact us and we'll get you going. It's absolutely free and fun to use, and helps keep the information displayed to our listeners correct.
